Song Review: In My Prison by IV Of Spades
Welcome to this blog post, in which I will be expressing my personal views, thoughts, and theories on the song "In My Prison" by IV of Spades.
Lyrics:
Help me
Something is a misery
Save me
Somebody wants to take me
Kill me
So I have a reason to live
Take me
So I have a reason to give
I'm in my prison
And I am the only prey
You are the reason
Why my heart and soul would stay
I'm in the middle of the night
I won't forget it on my mind
I can't remember
La, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la
I'm in the middle of the night
I won't be coming home tonight, oh!
Faster
Cars are slowly moving
Shining
Like a dream that we are facing
I'm in my prison
And I am the only prey
You are the reason
Why my heart and soul would stay
I'm in the middle of the night
I won't forget it on my mind
I can't remember
La, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la
I'm in the middle of the night
I won't be coming home tonight, oh!
(The lyrics are way too long, so I had to remove the parts that I think are unnecessary.)
I am not a fan of this band, but I do look up to their capabilities of writing, composing, and producing music. This band is indeed a gem and definitely a good representative of Filipino music or OPM!
HERE'S MY REVIEW:
We can tell that, at the very start of the song, the desperation was shown, as the character or the artist in the song stated these words: "Help me" and "Save me".
Based on my observations, the song is about a person who seeks to be saved from life's suffering; he is the only person who can do so, and it seems like he sees that the only way to do that is to take his own life.
If we'll look at the music video, we can assume that he is trapped in the decision of whether he will try his best not to take his own life or whether he will be doing so.
And it is because I believe it is a "Me vs. Me" situation—that somebody who wants to take him is also himself. He is in his own prison, as the title of the song states.
But the desire to live is also shown as he tries to escape from those with black auras' creatures, which I assume are also himself, portraying him as someone who holds danger—he is his own monster.
"Kill me, so I have a reason to live. Take me, so I have a reason to give". In which, I think the songwriter means—let's say, you are in a situation where you feel that it is your last moment in life, for example—drowning—in that moment, you will feel how desperate you are for air, will think about the reason to stay alive for, and will start to wish your life be prolonged. "Kill me, so I have a reason to live". As with that, where we felt almost like death, being alive is just what we want to be. "Take me, so I have a reason to give".
"I'm in my prison, and I am the only prey". It indicates the character being stuck with his own grievances in life.
Overall, we can perceive a story in this song about a person who is struggling to save himself from the pain that life is delivering him. Finding a cause to live—breaking free from his own horror—is the only thing he holds onto, and what keeps him alive is the igniting dream he has.
The rock band never failed to convey emotions; with every song, every instrument, every key, every note, and so on, they always came from the heart.
(Again, this is just a combination of the theories, perception, and thoughts of this user about this song. Let's interact. Let me know yours. In the comments!) ^^

I love IV of Spades as well! Your analysis provides insightful interpretation of the song's themes and lyrics. It shows a deep appreciation for the music and the emotional depth it conveys! 🙌
ReplyDeleteI agree with your interpretation on the line "Kill me, so I have a reason to live."
ReplyDeleteWe tend to get used to everything we have. Instead of appreciating, we demand what we don't have. When were in a situation where something, or someone, is being taken away from us, we get mad. Sadly, that's human nature. I hope that in this life I'm living, I'll get to appreciate everything I have instead of focusing on what I don't so that I'll live a fulfilling life.
